A group of forty-one mass communication students went for an educational tour to Kurukshetra-Chandigarh from Oct 31 – Nov 1. Among the highlights of the tour were visit to the Kalpana Chawla Planetarium, Panorama Science Centre, Dharohar in Kurukshetra University, Rock Garden Chandigarh and The Tribune, Chandigarh. Equipped with DSLRs, other types of digital cameras and scripts for travelogues, they were seen seeking guidance from the accompanying faculty on camera angles, light conditions and appropriate footage for their scripts. After lunch at the hotel in Kurukshetra, the students headed for a show at the Kalpana Chawla Planetarium where they were first introduced to the kind of training the famed astronaut was put through. The second destination of the day was Panorama Science Centre, Kurukshetra. The scientific reasoning deployed for Chroma (in TV studios) and the techniques of creating visual illusions commonly used in the cine world were demonstrated with the help of models. Light and sound show at Jyotisar (considered to be the birthplace of Bhagwat Gita) set the context for Brahma Sarovar, the final destination of the day. It is at Brahma Sarovar that the students were overwhelmed by the sheer height and light effects used in the display depicting Lord Krishna delivering the lessons of Karma to Arjuna. Particularly of interest to the students was the tricolor in which the body of Kargil martyr Major Nitin Bali was received by the state. The last stop of the day was Sukhna Lake. A walk along the smoky lake with orchestra playing the melodies of the yesteryears was indeed a pleasant conclusion of the day. Tired after the long day, the students were all set to hit the sack after dinner and DJ night at the hotel. The third day of the educational trip commenced with breakfast followed by the most looked forward destination, The Tribune Chandigarh. The students were received by Ms Harvinder Khetal, Assistant Editor and Ms Monica Kanwar, Senior Sub Editor (Online Desk) who tested the understanding of the students on journalistic writing. The circulation team guided the students to the press where they were shown the printing process. Last to address the students was Mr. Prashant Saxsena, News Editor (Special Pages). Reciting Sanskrit Shaloks and citing Shakespeare simultaneously, Prashant explained the relevance of literature in journalistic world.
