Long gone are the days when people showed regard for rules and regulations. Those were the times when safety was of utmost concern while travelling; people were scared to tamper with law; they observed propriety and decent conduct at all times; and most of all, one hardly came across somebody devoid of human values. All this seems to have changed today. We are living in world that can, at best, be described as callous and indifferent.
While travelling to work by metro one day, I happened to observe a bunch of 6-7 college going girls leaning on the metro door. Despite the repeated recorded announcements alerting passengers to “stay clear off the doors”, the girls continued doing so. Looking at them from a distance I felt that this was a generation that was neither bothered about its safety nor about its conduct in public. Chatting and giggling, they would merely move an inch here or an inch there, whenever the metro stopped, to allow more passengers to enter or exit. That they were blocking the way never once occurred to them.
Their complete disregard for a “safety message” made me wonder about what kind of education our system was imparting to the new generation. The education seems to have simply come down to learning a few facts written in the scholarly books in order to pass exams and earn degrees leading to cushy jobs. If we continue to nurture our next generation in this fashion , then , in a very short span of time, we will have an army of “educated barbarians” (J. Paul Getty,How to be rich). This new race –high on IQ , will remain woefully low on EQ.
The choice is to be made by us. Do we still simply wish to educate the minds without bothering to educate the hearts? An education system –be it formal or informal, that does not give values to its learners is, by no means, the right kind of education.
The attitude of the girls above represents the attitude of scores who enter college or workforce everyday and remain centered towards self. This kind of thinking , in the long run, translates into inconsiderateness and thoughtlessness that prevents nations from growing ; organizations from achieving goals and people from having harmonious relations with each other.
The sole reason behind writing this piece was to draw the attention of those who are listening to the rules that are being brutishly ignored, respect that is being brutally reduced to a few publically accepted gestures and mistakes that are casually being swept under the carpet.
Till the time we teach our younger generation to strike a balance between heart and mind , we will not be able to gift them a better world to live in. So, let’s take the lead and live a life where wisdom is the path to happiness & harmony.
